Ɔbenfo Ọbádéle Kambon has announced a new Black August series of Twi language classes and cultural orientation, beginning Saturday, August 29 at 4:00 p.m. GMT. The eight-class program is available both in person at Jamrock Restaurant at the University of Ghana and online via Zoom.

University-level grounding, conversational purpose
The program draws on Ɔbenfo Kambon’s training in linguistics and his focus on Akan language. In the announcement, he identifies Asante Twi, Akuapem Twi and Fante among the varieties informing his work. Yet the invitation is deliberately practical: it is for people who want to become conversational, not merely discuss language at a distance.
That makes the series particularly relevant for repatriates. Many people arrive in Ghana with commitment, professional experience and a desire to contribute, but language can remain a boundary between intention and fuller participation. Structured classes provide a place to make mistakes, receive correction and develop the habits that independent study often fails to sustain.
The timing during Black August gives the course another layer of meaning. Language loss and language recovery are connected to the history of Afrikan people across the diaspora. Studying Twi is therefore both a practical skill and an act of cultural reorientation.
The program costs 500 GHS or US$50, with a 50% discount available to members of selected organizations. Learners outside Accra can participate by Zoom.
